Fire on Kokusai Street destroys prefab hut

A fire broke out in a pre-fab hut on top of a tenant building on Kokusai Street, Naha, Saturday afternoon. Firefighters from Naha Fire Department extinguished the fire in about an hour. No one was injured.

According to officials at the Fire Department, a prefabricated 50-square meter hut used as a warehouse on top of a 3-story tenant building burned down. The fire also spread to the outer wall of a building next door and torched about 14 square meters of the wall, but caused no other damage.

July 15th was the first day of a 3-day national holiday and many tourists were milling about near the site became. Although many people were excited there was no panic.

Because of the fire, traffic on Kokusai Street was routed away from the site until 8:30 p.m.

Naha Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
