Ginowan sets up panel exhibition of O-tsunahiki

A photo panel exhibition of two O-tsunahiki in Ginowan, tug-of-war festivals in Oyama and at Okinawa International University, is running through July 28 on the first floor of Ginowan City Office. The exhibition displays photos, costumes, and the rope used at the festivals.

The history of the Ginowan Tug-of-War Festival goes back hundreds of years but was broken off during the Battle of Okinawa. It was revived in 2007, and since then the festival has been held once in every five years.

The festival in Oyama has a specific feature called “Agiee”, in which the sides bump the male and the female ropes into each other to determine which side wins.

The festival in Oyama on July 30 is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at Ohyama elementary school grounds. The one at Okinawa International University starts at 6:30 p.m. on the same day.
