What to do during rainy season on Okinawa?

Usually every year from early May through mid-June, rainy season comes to Okinawa. This can damp a lot of fun for the family and kids who just want to get out and play. Because after all, who wants to be stuck indoors here in Okinawa, right? Well, there are some places worth checking out and are a great option for a rainy day.

a. GODAC (Global Oceanographic Data Center)

GODAC is a research facility focused on studying lifeforms that live in the deep sea, as well the marine environment that supports them. There are many display samples of ocean creatures, as well as live ones, that are put on exhibition. You can also see some of their ocean vessels and research equipment they use for research. b. The Forest Toy Museum

The Forest Toy Museum is located at the Kunigami Forest Park in Kunigami Village. This is no ordinary toy museum. All the toys here are made of wood from the Yanbaru forest. Wood blocks, puzzles, pop-up toys are just some of the toys you will find there. Infants through middle-school age kids can enjoy themselves here in this relaxing atmosphere. ¥400 for adults, ¥200 for kids, free under 2 years old. 1094-1 Hentona, Kunigami Village.

c. Okinawa City Library

The Okinawa City Library moved to the Korinza building in 2017. It has a nice ambience with a lot more room than the previous library. People who don’t live in Okinawa City are also welcome to come use the facility. They can read the books, watch DVDs, and listen to CDs inhouse. 2-28-1 Chuou, Okinawa City.

d. Orion Beer Factory

The Orion Beer Factory offers visitors a guided tour throughout their facility. The tour is in Japanese, but there are many signs with English explanations on it and very easy for foreigners to understand. To cap it off, at the end of the tour visitors are welcome to taste test their draft beer for free. Non-alcohol beer and soft drinks are also available. e. Sports World Southern Hill

Sports World Southern Hill is the only place where you can ice skate in Okinawa. Skating shoes are available to rent. Skating cost ¥1700 for adults, ¥1500 for high school and junior high students, ¥1300 for elementary school and ¥1100 for 6 years and under. Rental shoes are included in the fee. It is recommended you bring your own jacket. Bowling lanes, billiards, and batting cages are also available on location. 460-1 Miyahira, Haebaru Town.

f. The Mini Mini Zoo

The Mini Mini Zoo is located in Uruma City and is free to everyone. Don’t let the name fool you; you will still find many different animals there to see. This is a great place for both kids and adults. Inside the zoo there are shops that serve cream puffs, cakes, pies, and plenty of snacks for the kids. The zoo is own by a chicken farm company and they also offer fresh eggs for sale. 660 Akamichi, Uruma City.
