20 million chrysanthemums to be exported in December

Chrysanthemum is the most popular flower used for New Year decorations in Japan, and they are a big business for growers in Okinawa.

According to Japan Agricultural Cooperative Okinawa, the volume of chrysanthemums sent from Okinawa to mainland destinations for this New Year season is likely to be 78 percent up from last year totaling 22.23 million flowers.

Last year much of the chrysanthemum crops suffered damage due to typhoons making the volume very low and thus the huge increase. But comparing the count past five years, this year’s volume is about average.

This year because of the low yen rate, the number of imported chrysanthemum has decreased, and that means better prices for local producers.
