Drunk U.S. serviceman crashes into taxi in Okinawa City

A 22-year-old U.S. Army serviceman stationed on Kadena Air Base drove his car over the center divider and crashed head on into a taxi on the oncoming lane on Route 330 in Yamazato Okinawa City, about midnight on May 10th.

The 63-year-old driver of the taxi suffered a cut on his head and hit his chest hard. The American driver broke his right wrist.  Another 21-year-old army serviceman who was sitting next to the driver suffered a bruise on his chest.  All three were taken to hospital.  All are conscious and none of their injuries is life threatening.

A police patrol that arrived at the scene did a breathalyzer test on the American driver and it showed about four times the legal limit of alcohol in his breath.

The serviceman was driving from Sonda towards Yamazato Crossing on the center lane of the Route 330 when, for some reason, he drove over the center median and crashed into the taxi.

Okinawa Police has not been able to question the servicemen about the accident because they were taken to the U.S. Naval Hospital on base in Ginowan.  The police plan to complete their investigation into the accident after their recovery.
