Art & Music exhibitions now at Okinawa Prefecture Museum

Pencil drawings by Susumu Kinoshita are almost excruciatingly detailed creating strong impressions on viewers.

‘The Power of the Sanshin’ and the ‘Susumu Kinoshita Exhibition’ are both in their exhibition closing days at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum this month.

Kinoshita uses 22 different grade pencils to draw his pictures.

The Susumu Kinoshita Exhibition – The Journey of Life ends its two-month run Tuesday.  The exhibition is open 9 a.m. ~ 6 p.m., except Friday and Saturday, when it stays open until 8 p.m., and Monday, when the Okinawa Prefectural Museum is closed. Last entry each day is a half-hour before closing. Admission is ¥800 for adults, ¥500 for college and high school students, and ¥300 for junior high school and elementary school students.

Artist Susumu Kinoshita is known for his pencil drawings, for which he uses a scale of 10H to 10B, a total of 22 graduations.  He’s drawn expressions of many, including the late poet who had leprosy, Tetsuo Sakurai, and many others who encountered bitter sorrows in their lifetimes.  Kinoshita draws all expressions, down to the slightest wrinkle, creating memorable impressions on observers.  Susumu Kinoshita’s earliest pieces, as well as his most recent works, are on exhibit.

The Power of the Sanshin – the beauty of the shape and mysterious sounds, has less than two weeks to run, finishing Sunday, May 11th.  Admission is ¥500 for adults, ¥300 for college and high school students, and ¥200 for junior high school and elementary school students.

Sanshin are shown not only as instruments but pieces of art.

The sanshin program takes visitors through how the sanshin has changed its form from the Chinese three-string instrument, which made its way to the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 15th century, where it has become the most typical Okinawan instrument.  Visitors will see the world of the sanshin as a beautiful piece of art, as a mysterious sounding instrument, and how its music invokes memories of Okinawa.
