Okinawan former boxing champ selected to Boxing Hall of Fame

Yoko Gushiken, a former professional boxing champion from Ishigaki Island, was selected for induction to the International Boxing Hall of Fame, IBHOF, when the organization announced boxers and affiliates selected for induction in 2015. The modern International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF), located in Canastota, NY, honors boxers, trainers and other contributors to the sport worldwide.

59-year-old Gushiken defended his world light-flyweight title 13 times in a row, which is the Japanese record. Gushiken is the second Japanese boxer who has been chosen for the honor, the first being Masahiko “Fighting” Harada.

Gushiken defeated a reigning champion and won the world title for the first time in 1976, and then retired from professional boxing when he failed to defend his title in 1981.

The ceremony will take place in June 2015 in Can1astota.
