Okinawa City to build Kings’ arena on bullfighting ring site

Okinawa City will build a new, large multi-purpose arena on the site of the current bullfighting ring in the Yamauchi area of the city. The new arena is a part of a project agreed to when Okinawa City was selected as the hometown of the Ryukyu Golden Kings basketball team.

The city will officially announce the details of the plan in June, including information on the audience capacity, facility layout and total cost of the project. According to informed sources, the city has had two locations under consideration within the athletic park for the new arena. One was the current bullfighting ring site and the other a park area just east of the Koza Athletic Gym.

The city decided on the bullfighting ring site because of traffic access from public roads to the arena, the access of construction vehicles to the site, and access for care and maintenance of other facilities in the park during the construction term.

The Ryukyu Golden Kings basketball team officially announced last April the selection of Okinawa City as the Kings’ hometown. When the new indoor arena that can hold more than 10,000-people audience is built, it will become the Kings’ home court, as the team enters the new B. League, the new unified Japanese pro-basketball league that will commence this fall.
