There has been reports of an increasing number of traffic accidents involving rental cars in northern sightseeing areas, such as Ocean Expo Park and Kouri Island.

According to Motobu Police, there has been 433 traffic accidents resulting in property damage as of the end of May, which is 45% more than during the same period in the previous year. Most of the increase has reportedly involved rental cars driven by foreign tourists from Taiwan, South Korea, and Hong Kong. To counter the problem, police has started distributing fliers written in Chinese, Korean, and English warning of the danger and urging safe driving.

About 70% of traffic accidents resulting in property damage in Motobu area involve rented cars. About half of the accidents occurred on parking lots.

The worst accident spots include parking lots at the Ocean Expo Park, Heart Rock on Kouri Island, and Fukugi Tree Tunnel in Motobu Town.
