Random body searches to begin at airports in October
Random body searches on international passengers at 29 airports across the country will start next month to prevent explosives from slipping through metal detectors.
The Transport Ministry says it is taking the measure because of terrorist plots involving the use of liquid or solid explosives reported in Britain and the United States. Presently, body searches are only performed on passengers who set off metal detectors before boarding, according to the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry.
The ministry hasn’t said how the body searches will be carried out, or by whom. The International Civil Aviation Organization recommends that countries conduct random contact inspections or full-body scans on passengers to enhance security.
