Rescue effort fails to save tourist from drowning
A call to the 11th Regional Coast Guard headquarters through a fire station near Ginoza Fishing Port came in Saturday about 1:50 p.m that a man had been pulled from the water, nearly drowned.
Nakagusuku Coast Guard rescue crews rushed to the port, where they took the 31-year-old victim, an Aomori Prefecture man visiting Okinawa as a tourist and to go diving, to a hospital. His fellow workers had found him snorkeling, but sinking below the surface.
The unconscious man, who was not wearing a life jacket, was pronounced dead at a hospital nearly an hour later.
