Taiwan’s Parliament claims Senkaku islets ownership

Taiwan’s parliament has adopted a resolution declaring ownership of the Japanese—controlled Senkaku Islans in the East China Sea, called Diaoyutai in Taiwan.

TheTaiwanese government began claiming sovereignty over the uninhabited islands in the early 1970’s, but the legislative body has adopted a resolution related to the islands for the first time.  The opposition People First Party proposed the resolution, which was also supported by the ruling Kuomintang and the biggest opposition Democratic Progressive Party.

The opposition Taiwan Solidarity Union, which is close to former President Lee Teng-hui, voted against the resolution.
