Marine arrested for driving drunk

Naha Police arrested a 24-year-old Marine on suspicion of drunk driving Saturday afternoon.

Naha Police say they arrested LCpl. Eric Lopez, who is stationed on Camp Kinser, after he was involved in a collision on a one-way street near Miebashi monorail station about 4:25 p.m. on Saturday. Police say that Lopez had driven the one-way street wrong way against the traffic, and collided with a motorcycle driven by a 54-year-old local man. The man suffered a minor injury on his knee.

When the police arrived at the scene, they detected smell of alcohol in Lopez’s breath. The breathalyzer test showed four times the legal limit of alcohol in his breath and he was arrested.

When questioned Lopez has refused to talk demanding to have a lawyer first. Police also say he tried to leave the scene when the police arrived.

I’m just waiting for some silly people to try and justify the marine in questions actions. Seems like the most popular thing for service members on this forum to do. After all there’s no way any service member ever does anything silly. No not at all. Please defend him and try to justify his actions. I’ll be waiting in the real world. >< sorry just all this silliness is pointless. Man up to those values you swore to when you took your oath. Best times of my life were in Okinawa. And I didn't need alcohol to enjoy myself. And when I did drink I had enough common sense to not do anything stupid.

    Nah just calling it as I see it. Even the owner of the bar I went to there, himself a former marine DI said it was silly how much crap service members pulled and even more silly the way most other service members tried to justify it. I agree it sucks the rep we get there but think about it this way, we are guests there. If the tables were turned you think Americans would settle for foreigners doing these things in America? No. Not at all. So why the hypocrisy toward one of our biggest allies?

      Is it u reasonable for them to expect common decency? Hell I’d be pissed if someone did these things in my hometown. I was pissed not to on long ago when Mickey Schunick went missing and was found dead in my city here. We get all up in arms saying they should appreciate us we are there to protect them. OK. So who protects them from us? From the rapists and drunk drivers? Don’t get upset because they are angry at the actions of a silly few. Because you damn well you would be just as upset if they were doing this in your hometown as guests.

Please, there are 10 times as many locals driving drunk here on a daily basis…many of them with zero liability insurance either. I see these oji-sans and salarymen every night and early every single morning.

    Nobody? So I guess all these new strict laws and campaigns against drunk driving that have been implemented all over Japan, and especially in Okinawa, are just only to show they like to drink a lot and not actually trying to address a problem. Do you even follow what goes on in Japan or do you just enjoy pretending the only news that goes on in Japan is what you see in papers on base?

  Hey again guess what its their country!!!!!! If a bunch of Japanese self defense force guys cane to america and started drinking and driving or raping people you would be more than upset wouldn’t you? As has been sgated before. Learn Japanese and watch local news. Its discussed daily how much they do it. We are foreigners so of course we hear about our mistakes a bit more.

    Dude, you might as well be arguing with a brick wall. These people have some serious persecution complexes and will look for any reason at all to justify it. The strong nationalism only makes them look harder for justification. If they would take the time to actually watch the evening news on NHK, they’d see they spend only a small fraction of time on US military incidents (some of these incidents got barely a minute of airtime) and a whole lot more on serious events and crimes committed all over the rest of Japan. That tunnel incident killing 9 in mainland dominated the evening news, but to so many of the commenters here, the fact that they spent 45 seconds talking about the military means they are horribly biased, ignorant, and ungrateful. It’s ridiculous. And a local paper spending a lot of time on local incidents that happen to involve the military (which is important to people here, especially with 25% of the island being taken up by bases) is just the worst thing ever.

      You can blame that thinking on Japan Update, because they blast the US Military here every second they get. The funny thing is they make their living off of their existence yet they bite the hand that feeds constantly. You’d think a company which makes its money off the US presence here would “stroke the kitty” every once in a while, but they don’t. They don’t report on the community service events, and they don’t show us partaking in cultural events with the locals. Their goal is to drive a wedge between the US Military personnel and the Japanese locals.

        I’ve actually seen stories on community events and other positive things in japan update while I was there and since I’ve been home. Thing is the bad always gets more ATTN then the good

Okinawa is whiny. Everything is used as leverage to continue / get even more federal subsidization that it already does–which is way more than any other prefecture gets percentage wise. Ridiculous.

Use I agree there are plenty of crimes between Japanese. But are you Japanese ? No then stop worrying about it. That is their buisness. My life was hell when I got there. I had to learn trust and respect just like I had to do in the army. Just like I had to do with marines I worked with. Problem is most stationed there , whether its service members or dependants have a damn superiority complex. Why don’t they speak English? I don’t have time tobkearn Japanese. Yeah well you’re in their country. Learn the language and culture or stay on base. No one is forcing you to venture out. There’s wrongs on both sides but damn Its sickening to see so many try to defend rapists or drunken morons. Yeah maybe some of it is propaganda. But I know from two years being there myself that a lot of it is outright stupidity and cultural insensitivity. An unwillingness to be the good ambassador all service members are supposed to be. They’re not saying oh what crimes are Americans committing back in their country. No they’re worried about what’s happening in theirs. Action and reaction. Its the most basic rule. If you commit the crime pay the price. But don’t get up in arms when someone screws up and pays when you know damn well good do the same if the Japanese had an army with a base in America and they were raping locals. Or starting fights etc. I’m not siding with anyone. Japanese screw up as do Americans there. Let the Japanese worry about their own. But when one of us screw up their. 9 times out ta 10 they are watching out for their own. Be part of the solution. Demand more from your service members. Or someone breaks in or tries to break into their homes. Americans there seem to be the whiners. “Omg how dare the Japanese try to arrest someone for rape or DUI. How can they we are american!!!” I’m patriotic but get over yourself. Wrong is wrong. And if you want proof they talk about more than that. Learn the language and watch the news. Hang out in an place that doesn’t have many Americans and watch the cops work. Read about local crime rages and arrests not involving Americans. Yeah our mistakes are big.
