Funds for posting GSDF unit on Yonaguni sought

According to recent press reports, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said that the government plans to post a Ground Self-Defense Force unit on Yonaguni Island. The move is scheduled to take place by the end of March 2016.

The specific task of the unit would be monitoring Chinese activities around the disputed Senkaku islands in the East China Sea.

The plan calls for stationing about 100 Ground Self Defense Force personnel on Yonaguni located about 150 kilometers from the Senkakus.

The Defense Ministry has requested ¥6.2 billion yen for the plan in the fiscal 2013 budget.
