Okinawa General Bureau announced that Okinawa Ocean Expo Park counted 3,714,274 visitors during 2012, which is a 6.8% increase over the year before, and the highest number on record since 1976 when the park opened.

The bureau analyzed that the increase was caused by an number of low cost carriers that started to fly to Okinawa, and also huge cruise ships that brought a large number of visitors. The total number of visitors to Okinawa also was 7.2% higher than previous year at 5,924,700.

Other factors include the Christmas illumination that was arranged in the ark for the first time, and the Asia Pacific Orchid Conference in Okinawa in January that pushed the numbers up, too.
