A 34-year-old Okinawa Expressway maintenance contractor Makoto Igei was killed in the morning of July 4, while working on the expressway, when he was hit by a car driven by a 36-year-old man from Okinawa City.

According to Okinawa Prefectural Police investigating the accident, Igei had been working on the side strip of the Okinawa Expressway with a working crew when he was hit. The crew’s car was also hit.

Igei was taken to a hospital unconscious, and confirmed dead at 9 a.m. on the same day. Another member of the work crew who had been sitting in the crew car suffered an injury on his leg.

Investigators suspect that the driver of the car that caused the accident had fallen asleep. After the accident, the traffic on the expressway was restricted for about four hours.
