Ginowan bomb disposal forces 1,645 to evacuate

A WWII-era 250kg U.S.-made bomb was discovered and disposed of at a building construction site in the Ganeko district of Ginowan City, Sunday. 692 households and 70 companies are located within a radius of 288 meters from the site, with a total of 1,645 people forced to evacuate.

The disposal work also forced traffic adjustments causing a heavy traffic jam in the area.

The disposal started at 10:38 a.m., and was completed at 11:12 a.m.

The disposal evacuation was the largest in Ginowan City ever. 110 Ginowan City staff members called around all houses in the area to order residents to evacuate before the disposal work. The traffic control measures had started from 10:10 a.m., Ganeko intersection was closed and the road in front of the Okinawa International University became heavily congested because most of cars detoured to the road from routes 330 and 34.
