Ban on men entering Se-Fa-Utaki under consideration
Nanjo City Mayor Keishun Koja announced Sep. 20th, that he would consider controlling the entrance of male visitors to one of Okinawa’s World Heritage Sites, the Se-Fa-Utaki.
The reason is that as the number of visitors has increased, the stone path leading to the site is wearing away, and there’s also a problem with manners of tourists.
In the Ryukyu Kingdom Era, Se-Fa-Utaki was a sacred place where men were not allowed to enter. The mayor says that this will be re-analyzed, and then by 2015 decided, whether men again would be banned from entering the shrine.
