Noguchigera seen in Nago

Government-designated Special Protected and Endangered Species bird know as Noguchigera, or Okinawa Woodpecker, Sapheopipo noguchi, was observed in Nago on Sep. 28. This marks the first time a noguchi gera has been seen in four years. A worker at Toguchi Yutaka bird sanctuary spotted the bird.

The Noguhigera is registered in Japan Ministry of the Environment’s red data book as a IA type, meaning the bird is extremely endangered and in danger of becoming extinct in the immediate future.
