Typhoon Fitow hits northern Okinawa

Typhoon Fitow hit the northern part of Okinawa main island, Oct. 5th. but had less than expected effect on the southern part of the island.

Never the less, all Okinawa public transportation systems were shut down influencing lots of residents. All bus routes and the monorail were suspended from 2 p.m. In Tomigusuku, on Yone Bridge on Route 331, a 4-ton truck was stranded on the street causing the road to be blocked.

All sea and air transportation were also paralyzed. A total of 288 flights scheduled to arrive and depart Okinawa were canceled affecting about 28,000 people.

In Oku, Kunigami Village, the northernmost point of Okinawa Island, the strongest winds were recorded at 46.5 m/s while on Yoron Island north of Okinawa the winds rose to 53.5 m/s.

Elsewhere, at Miyako-jima’s Shimoji Airport the strongest winds were 42.2 m/s. Five people in Naha City and on Miyako-jima were injured as they were caught in the strong gusts, but none of the seriously. In Yeayama, Ishigaki Island, farmers worried about damages to crops.
