Okinawa Churashima Foundation councilor Masaru Nakamura and his team announced, Nov. 7, their success of changing a grown adult female fish into a male.

Nakamura says that his team completed the feat by giving the fish a compound of medicines that is designed to block female hormones.

Nakamura and his team are the first in the world to succeed in inducing the change. Although there are some types of fish, which naturally change gender before they are fully grown, it was thought to be impossible to induce such a change in an adult fish.

Another interesting discovery was that all the offspring of the “man-made” male were female.
