Okinawa’s oldest pottery found

Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum Director Susumu Asato announced Nov. 21st that pieces of pottery were discovered in Sakitari Cave remains in Nanjo City.

The unearthed pottery pieces were analyzed by radioactive carbon dating, and determined to date back approximately 8,000 years to the Jomon period. Experts were ecstatic about the find stating, “Until now, there had been no human bone nor pottery discoveries of any kind leaving a hole in the history of the past 10 thousand years, but with the discovery of this pottery we will be able to fill this hole.”
