Woman dies in freak car accident in Omoromachi

A woman in her 60’s died when a car driven by a man in his 70’s ran over her in Omoromachi, Naha City, Sunday evening.

According to Naha Police, the man was exiting from a parking lot when the car for no apparent reason suddenly accelerated, and obviously out of control ran over a woman walking on the sidewalk across the street. The car then plowed into a restaurant across the street.  No one in the restaurant was hurt, nor was the driver of the car.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

According to eyewitnesses the car, coming out of the parking lot, suddenly accelerated leading to a speculation that the driver might have by mistake stepped on the accelerator instead of his brakes.

Police investigation into the cause of the accident continues.

Just another reason why everyone over 60 should be forced to retake a driving test every two years. There are too many folks that can’t react in time and drive safely still operating a vehicle that should be using public transportation for everyone’s safety.
