Tuesday marked Nanakusa-no-sekku

Tuesday, January 7th, marked the well-known Festival of Seven Herbs (nanakusa no sekku).

This is a Japanese custom when people eat a variety of rice porridge made with seven herbs. The seven herbs are water dropwort, shepherd’s purse, cudweed, chickweed, nipplewort, turnip and radish, although common local herbs are often used to substitute some of them. The custom of eating nanakusa-gayu on this day is to bring longevity and health.

On Okinawa, on January 7th of the lunar calendar, some families make vegetable juice using local herbs.
