Hackers net ¥23 million after breaking into banks’ computers
Hackers broke into the computer systems of the Bank of Okinawa and the Bank of the Ryukyus, and managed to steal a total ¥23 million from the two banks.
According to Okinawa Prefetural Police, this is the first time in Okinawa that a bank has been reported to have been the victim of hackers and has had money stolen. Police investigators are now analyzing computers at both banks trying to figure out how the hackers were able to get into their systems, and where the missing money went.
The Bank of Okinawa reported that two companies’ accounts were broken into and a total of ¥11 million was stolen, while the Bank of the Ryukyus had one company account from where ¥12 million was taken.
