Local festival entertain with goat fights, shiqwasa

Now, here’s a chance to experience something different this weekend!

All entertainment at the festival is strictly local.

Katsuyama is a little hamlet located on the hills northwest of Nago City. It’s known for its tangerine and shiqwasa groves, but most people have never even heard of it.

This weekend the community at Katsuyama organizes a festival called Katsuyama Shiqwasa Aroma Festival that this year takes place for the 10th time. The festival features a hiking course on the hills where participants can enjoy the fresh unpolluted air on the hills and incredibly lush vegetation of the season and, of course, the Okinawan Shiqwasa trees along the way and their aroma wafting in the air.

Karate is popular among local youth.

There are two courses to choose from, both starting at 9 a.m. The participation fee is ¥500 or ¥100 depending on the course.

A goat-fighting tournament on both days starting at 1:30 p.m. adds a dose of exotic charm to the day, and for those who become really inspired by the fights can participate in a raffle to win a living goat! Participation for raffle costs ¥300.

Throughout the day there will also be a variety of live performances for all ages on a stage. So, why not pack the folks in a car and head up north to enjoy some fun in nature?

The festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday starting at 9 a.m. on both days at Katsuyama Community Center at 467 Katsuyama, Nago City.
