A passerby noticed a body in a roadside gutter in Kanegusuku, Kume Island, Thurday.

When police and fire department rescue team arrived at the scene and pulled the body out, they discovered the male victim was already dead. He was later identified as a 49-year-old local resident.

According to the fire department, the gutter is about one meter high and wide, and when the body was found there was water about 70 cm deep, and only the hand of the victim was visible.

Naha Police is conducting investigation trying to establish the cause of death.
