A 49-year-old man was killed when he was ran over by a 46-year-old restaurant owner on Hwy 58 in Ameku, Naha, about 15 minutes after midnight, Monday.

According to Naha Police investigating the accident, Hideki Hayashi, a professional diver, was jaywalking across the street when the car driven by the restaurant owner approached. When the driver noticed the man crossing the street he hit the brakes but too late.

Hayashi was taken to a hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead about one hour later. The accident happened on a straight stretch of the road, where there is no pedestrian crossing.

Naha Police are continuing the investigation.
