Tokashiki Island trains young farmers from Philippines

Yumeshima Tokashiki, an agricultural production corporation located on Tokashiki Island, started accepting trainees from the Philippines four years ago to teach them organic agriculture of rice, field potato and other vegetables.

According to Yumeshima Tokashiki President Seirin Toyama, “Most of the young people of this island go off to other places when they graduate from school, and we are always in need of help on the farms. I am very grateful for the help of the trainees.”

Until now, there has been six trainees, three of whom have gone back to the Philippines, and are now teaching the methods they learned here in their country continuing agriculture.

Currently there are three trainees from the Philippines on Tokashiki who are scheduled to be training for two to three years.
