Tsunami shelter tower to be build on Kudaka Island

Nanjo City mayor announced Tuesday considering a plan to construct an evacuation tower on Kudaka Island, to provide a safe haven for local residents in case of a tsunami.

According to the plan, the tower would be build on the premises of the island elementary and junior high school, and rise 20 meters above the sea level.

The tower would be able to accommodate 230 people, which covers the entire island population. The tower would be located at the central part of the island making it easy for residents and visiting tourists to access.

If approved, the construction would begin in August and be completed by next February.
