Chartered fishing boat catches fire off Nago
The Nago Station of the Japan Coast Guard received a message from a small fishing vessel, Apr. 24, reporting that the boat’s engine room had caught fire while out on Nago Bay.
Nine passengers onboard had put their life vests on, and jumped in the water. All were rescued into a Coast Guard patrol boat about 30 minutes later, and no one was injured.
According to Nago Coast Guard, the boat in fire was about 3.2 kilometers offshore of Awa, Nago City. The Ryu-Q Asahi Broadcasting (QAB) had chartered the boat for program coverage. They were on their way back when the engine room caught fire. The boat sank about three hours later.
The Coast Guard are continuing the investigation for the cause of the fire.
