2,100 march in Sunday demonstration
According to organizers, about 2,100 people marched around the MCAS Futenma on Sunday, to protest the government’s plan to relocate the base to Henoko.
At times heavy rainfall dampened the enthusiasm of the demonstrators who had come mostly from other parts of the nation and chanted anti base slogans, such as “We oppose a new base in Henoko” and “Remove the Osprey!”
After the march, the protesters held a rally in Ginowan to mark the 42nd anniversary of Okinawa’s reversion to Japanese administration.
At the rally the demonstrators adopted a resolution stating they oppose the plans of the Japanese and U.S. governments to strengthen U.S. military bases on Okinawa and demand a drastic revision of the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement.
The Sunday demonstration was a culmination of a three-day march that had started in Henoko on Friday. According to organizers, the march and demonstrations drew altogether about 5,000 people.
