Tornado observed offshore of Ishigaki Island

A tornado was observed between Ishigaki and Taketomi islands about noon on May 23rd.

According to eyewitnesses, the tornado moved from Ishigaki towards Taketomi Island and disappeared in about 10 minutes.

According to the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory, because of the the seasonal rain front, cumulonimbus clouds occurred in the area, and were passing through the Yaeyama Islands causing favorable circumstances for a tornado.
