Restaurants and fish mongers flock to the Tomari Iyumachi Fish Market every day in search of the freshest fish on Okinawa, but this weekend the market is inviting dads and families to come check out the fish, and have some fun celebrating Fathers’ Day at the same time.

At the end of the tuna cutting shows, the chunks of fish are sold to the public.

The Tomari Iyumachi Fathers’ Fish Fair is a two-day event Saturday and Sunday, running 10 a.m ~ 6 p.m. The market is located in Minatomachi, Naha City, Map: http://goo.gl/maps/hk18S.  With exception of rides on the Ferry “Orca” cruise, admission to the weekend is free.  The events are being organized by the Okinawa Fresh Fish Distribution, Inc.

Events get under way at 11 a.m. Saturday with traditional ceremonies, followed at 1 p.m. by a “Best Tuna Dish” tournament, and then demonstrations on how to cut tuna.  Those Ferry “Orca” cruises take place 4:30 p.m. ~ 5 p.m., at a cost of ¥300.  Saturday evening caps with Kazuya Gibo in live performance of Okinawan folk songs starting at 6:30 p.m.

A tuna cutting show and sale get under way Sunday morning at 11 a.m., followed at 1 p.m. by a tuna tasting contest.  More Ferry “Orca” cruises are being offered at 1:15 p.m.  Sansana performs live at 2 p.m., in advance of a second tuna cutting program at 3:30 p.m. and more ferry cruises at 5 p.m.

Southern Band Okinawa brings the Fish Fair to a musical conclusion with a performance at 6:30 p.m.
