Okinawa has biggest share of mini vehicles

The Japan Mini Vehicle Association announced on Jun. 11th that Okinawa has the highest share in the country of mini or light motor vehicles compared to the total number of cars.

Mini or light vehicles, often called K-cars and recognizable for their yellow number plates, are cars with engines of 550cc or less. Nationwide the share of such vehicles is 37.9% of the total. In Okinawa 55.3%, or slightly over half of all cars are in that category, which makes the prefecture the 1st in the nation for the 5th consecutive year.

The Japan Mini Vehicle Association officials speculate that the rise in gasoline prices and the recent tax hike may be a reason for the popularity of mini vehicles here in addition to the fact that driving distances on Okinawa are short.
