Dean of the University of the Ryukyus Hajime Oshiro, and Ginowan City Mayor Atsushi Sakima visited the Okinawa Prefectural Office on May 29th, to meet Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima, to request transferring the Medical Department of the university and its hospital to Ginowan City.

They asked for the governor’s support for a plan to transfer the institution and its facilities to 51-heactare piece of land that has been occupied by the Futenma Housing area on Camp Foster, next to the new U.S. Navy Hospital. The land is scheduled to return to Japan next March.

The housing has already been closed, and the buildings on it are being demolished. Okinawa Prefecture is reportedly also considering building a baryon cancer treatment facility on the site.

Governor Nakaima reportedly agreed to positively support the idea.
