Infant left in car dies

A 5-month-old infant boy died in the beginning of June after his mother left him in her car on a pachinko parlor parking lot Tomigusuku in southern Okinawa.

The woman, identified as 40-year-old Kiyono Arakaki, found her child lifeless when she returned to the car from playing pachinko, and took the infant to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to family members, the cause of baby’s death was heatstroke. On that day the temperature reached up to 29.8 degrees in the afternoon.

Investigators suspect the boy was left in the car for about six hours from 10:30 a.m. until about 5 p.m. Police say all the car windows were shut, Okinawa Prefecture Police arrested the woman Tuesday, and are questioning her. She will reportedly be charged with causing the death of the baby boy by gross negligence.
