Pieces of metal found in brown sugar

The brown sugar producing company Hateruma Sugar Industry announced Jul. 18 that three small pieces of metal was discovered mixed with the bags of product after they were shipped to retailers.

Company officials say that the metal likely found its way into the packages during the manufacturing process. As a result, about 65 tons of the product was recalled from retailers and 1,511 tons from 10 commercial users was also collected.

Company officials said that three pieces of metal, about 0.2 millimeters in diameter and 150 millimeters (6 inches) long that appeared to have been a part of springs made of hard steel wire were discovered. No health hazard incidents have been reported.
