A ten-year-old elementary school student vacationing in Zamami Village from Shiga Prefecture is in critical condition following an incident while snorkeling.

The youngster was at Nishibama Beach on Aka Island in Zamami Village last Wednesday when he disappeared while snorkeling.  Searchers found him two meters beneath the water, but still breathing.  He was taken to the Aka medical office on the island in respiratory or cardiac arrest.

The boy remains hospitalized, unconscious, but officials say he’s breathing on his own.
