JASDF hosts Chinen sub base summer festival Saturday

The Japanese Air Self Defense Force is celebrating its 60th anniversary Saturday with a free festival at the Chinen Sub Base in southeastern Okinawa.

The festival takes place at the sub base located on the hill of Chinen Point at 1641 Sashiki aza, Sashiki, Nanjo City. Gates open at 2:30 p.m. for the afternoon and evening festival, with features ground equipment exhibits, an air show, performances by the Southwestern Composite Air Division band, and singers and Eisa.

The Chinen area, situated near the World Heritage Sefa-utaki and other historic sights, is often overlooked by people exploring Okinawa’s sights. The Saturday air shot takes place at 6 p.m., featuring F-15s, the U-125A, UH-60J, and CH-47J. The ground equipment exhibit runs throughout the afternoon and evening, featuring things not often available at festivals, including the Light Armored Vehicle, Patriot Air Defense System launching stations, and drill information.

The Southwestern Composite Air Division Band performs at 6:10 p.m., followed at 7:40 p.m. by the folk song show “Island Girl Singer ‘Ten’”.
