Okinawa aims at over 10 million tourists by 2021
Governor Hirokazu Nakaima announced that the goal of the Okinawa Prefecture Tourism Office is to increase the number of visitors to the prefecture to more than 10 million per year by 2021, and to increase tourism-related income to 1 trillion yen.
To this end, the prefecture is planning to establish a partnership between public and private sectors. This group would be tasked to lay out a roadmap to achieve this goal by the end of the fiscal year.
The governor identified transportation infrastructure enhancements and creation of theme parks as key points for this plan. He also stressed that tourist accommodation and souvenir revenue must be increased in order for the goals to be achieved.
