Irabu – Miyako Bridge to open in January
A new bridge connecting Miyako and Irabu islands will open to traffic on Jan. 31st , 2015.
The total length of the bridge is approximately 3,540 meters, which makes it the longest bridge in Okinawa. Additionally, this is the longest bridge in Japan that that no toll charge s are collected.
The construction on the bridge started in 2006, and it took about nine years to complete. Toshihiko Shimoji, the mayor of Miyako Island City, says, “this bridge is opening a new vista of making a significant contribution to promotion and improvement of both Miyako and Irabu Islands.
