Ginowan Shinmachi to get facelift, community center

Ginowan City Mayor Atsushi Sakima has presented a plan to construct a community center at the former site of so called Shinmachi in Maehara, Ginowan City.

Shinmachi used to be known as an area of sex-related businesses. After a police crackdown on Shinmachi in 2010, the area became a ghost town.  Local residents have demanded improvements to the area in order to get rid of the negative image that Shinmachi still carries.

The proposed facility would contain meeting rooms and a hall for lecture presentations and study circles, and it’s also envisioned to be a site for international exchanges among local and foreign people.  In addition, the facility would be used as a health counseling and social welfare center.

The total project expenses including the development of the near-by Futenma area are estimated to reach about ¥9 billion, of which 75% would be subsidized by the Japanese Central Government.  The project is proposed to be complete in 2025 at the earliest.
