Washita Shop to start live music events

Washita Shop, a prefecture-run antenna shop on Kokusai Street promoting local Okinawan products, is expanding its horizons to entertainment.

The shop is starting a new service of live music events featuring Okinawa‘s young performing artists.  The shop aims to support young local artists and help them to expand their fan base outside Okinawa.

The music support project is scheduled to take place four times a week at the Washita Shop on Kokusai Street starting this month. Admission to the events is free.  In the future, Washita Shop would like to expand the project to other Washita Shops in the mainland of Japan, and distribute information and appeal of Okinawan culture.

The live music performances are scheduled for between 3 and 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Washita Shop Store Manager says, “We would like tourists to take more interest in Okinawa through these music performances.  We are also expecting to increase sales of Okinawan products and also the number of repeat customers.  For young artists, we would like them to take advantage of this opportunity, and hope that this experience would lead to a major debut for them.”
