O26 coli bacteria infection found in Yaeyama nursery school

The Okinawa Prefecture Health and Longevity Division announced on Nov. 27 that seven nursery school children in the Yaeyama district were found infected with O26 coli bacteria.

Prefecture officials say six of the children fell ill with diarrhea, but all have since recovered.

The infection was discovered on November 5th when a one-year-old female infant suffering from sudden diarrhea was diagnosed with the O26 infection. A local healthcare center tested the stool of all 27 children in her class, and four childcare workers, and found six of the children infected.

Health officials are investigating and trying to pinpoint the source and route of the infection.
