According to the Okinawa Prefectural Police official statistics, the number of crimes committed by the U.S. military personnel in 2014 decreased to the lowest level since the reversion of Okinawa in 1972. In addition, the number of drinking and driving incidents decreased to the lowest in a decade.

A prefectural police spokesman speculated that the most likely reason is the enforcement of strict military discipline and the toughened liberty policy that was in place through almost the entire 2014. However, right after the recent relaxing of the policy, three military persons were arrested one after another last month.

The breakdown of crimes was one sexual assault case, violent crimes like assaults resulting in injury four cases, and 15 cases of robbery.
