Henoko plan opponents hold first demonstration in Tokyo

According to organizers, some 7,000 people took part in a demonstration in Tokyo against the relocation of MCAS Futenma to Henoko, on Jan. 25.

The demonstration took place in front of the National Parliament Building, and included people from various civic groups and academics as well as people from Okinawa. The winners of Okinawa’s four single-seat constituencies in the Dec. 14 parliamentary elections took part in the demonstration. All four had campaigned on a platform opposing the relocation plan, solidly defeating the ruling Liberal Democratic Party candidates from Okinawa. The protesters joined their hands forming a human circle around the Diet

This marked the first time a demonstration against the plan to transfer the MCAS Futenma to Henoko has been held in mainland Japan.
