Brown rice proven effective in preventing diabetes
A group of researchers led by Dr. Hiroaki Masuzaki, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of the Ryukyus, and Chisayo Kozuka, a fellow at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, have discovered that a substance found in brown rice is effective in preventing diabetes.
According to the group’s findings, a component called Gamma Orizanol that is present in large quantities in brown rice is effective in preventing and protection against diabetes even after the disease has set in. The group plans to publish its study results shortly in an academic journal.
According to the group, the results of the research are expected to yield practical applications in about five years.
In 2012, the researcher group presented at a conference that Gamma Orizanol acts to curb a person’s desire to eat high-fat food, and that led the group to discover the utility of brown rice. The researchers found out in their study that Gamma Orizanol will work recovering cells in addition to preventing the decrease of cells.
