Large demonstrations planned for Henoko, Tokyo

A local citizen’s group, opposition lawmakers in the Diet who were elected from Okinawa and Prefectural Assembly members of the ruling parties announced their plan to hold a large demonstration against the construction of the new base and relocation of the MCAS Futenma to Henoko. The demonstration is scheduled to take place starting at 1 p.m. on Mar. 21st.

The organizers of the demonstration held a press meeting at the Prefectural Assembly on Sunday to explain the plan.  The site of the demonstration is scheduled to be the beach at Sedake, Nago City, and the organizers aim to have more than 3,000 people to join.

The Demonstration Planning Committee intends to hold continuous meetings with prefectural and municipal assembly members in order to discuss specific action and further policy. They also plan to organize demonstrations not only on the island but in Tokyo in May and June.

The large protest rally in front of the planned relocation site in Henoko will be the fourth since last August when the national government started a drilling survey on the seabed.  Despite of a request by the prefectural government to the national government to stop the construction, the national government has maintained the construction and survey activities on the ocean. Organizers say they aim at showing time and again the willingness of local people on Okinawa to take action against the relocation.
