Don Quijote, one of the main discount store chains in the country that has three shops on Okinawa, has started accepting payments in foreign currencies in its main outlets. The new service is aimed mainly at foreign visitors, but anyone is welcome to use it.

Two of the Don Quijote shops on Okinawa have started accepting cash payments in foreign currencies from May 11th.  Although the service is aimed at making purchases easier for foreign visitors, the shops will accept cash payments in foreign currency from anyone, including Japanese, in all of its participating stores in Japan. However, only bills and no coins are accepted, and the change is given in yen.

Seven foreign currencies, including the U.S. dollar, Chinese Yuan and Euro, are accepted in response to requests from domestic customers.  In addition, payments in Taiwan Dollars, Korean Won, Thai Baht, and Hong Kong Dollars are accepted.  Customers can even combine currencies with Japanese Yen for payment, so people returning home from overseas with left-over foreign money can use that for payments at Don Quijote stores, or respectively, foreign visitors who have not exchanged enough yen can add their own currency to pay for their purchase. The exchange fee is included in the Don Quijote exchange rate.
